It was conducted by the\u00a0British Second Army\u00a0between 13 and 26 January 1945. The objective was to drive the\u00a0German 15th Army\u00a0back across the rivers\u00a0Roer\u00a0and\u00a0Wurm\u00a0and move the frontline further into Germany. The operation was carried out by\u00a0Lieutenant-General\u00a0Neil Ritchie’s\u00a0XII Corps\u00a0by three divisions: the\u00a07th Armoured Division\u00a0(Major-General\u00a0Lewis Lyne), the\u00a043rd (Wessex) Infantry Division\u00a0(Major-General\u00a0Ivor Thomas) and the\u00a052nd (Lowland) Infantry Division\u00a0(Major-General\u00a0Edmund Hakewill-Smith).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The 52nd Lowland were formed as a mountain division and were equipped and trained for mountain warfare. As this requirement was deemed less important the division was re-roled as an air portable division. Eventually the division was deployed as a standard infantry division.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
